MEDITATION ...

from the homilies on Ezekiel by Saint Gregory the Great, pope
(Book 1,11,4-6; CCL 142.170-172)
For the love of Christ does not save myself in speaking of him

"Son of man, I have appointed watchman for the house of Israel" (Ezekiel 3, 16). It should be noted that when the Lord sends one to preach, calling him by name as a sentinel. The Sentinel is in fact always on a high place, to see from far away no matter what is going to happen. Anyone who has set as a sentinel of the people must stand up with his life in order to benefit by his foresight.
How these words sound harsh I say! So saying, hurt myself, because nor exercised my tongue as befits the preaching, nor my life follows the language, even when it does what it can.
Now I do not deny being guilty, and I see my slowness and carelessness. Perhaps the same recognition of my guilt I will lose with the court pitiful.
course, when I was in the monastery I was able to retain the language from the useless words, and to keep the mind occupied in an almost continuous state of deep prayer. But when I put the weight back to the pastoral office, the mind can no longer collect assiduously in itself, because it is divided among many affairs.
I must now turn to the issues of churches, monasteries hours, often to examine the lives and actions of individuals, and now to interest the private affairs of citizens, now groaning under the swords of the barbarians and irruptive fear of the wolves that threaten the flock entrusted to me.
Now I have to give me thought of material things, because they lack appropriate aid to all those who take the rule of discipline bound. Sometimes I have to bear with undisturbed mind some raiders, sometimes confront them, but trying to keep the charity.
So when the mind is divided and torn apart leads us to consider a mass so big and so wide issues, as could fall in on itself, to devote himself to preaching the whole and not leave the ministry of the word?
Since then the need for office has to deal with men of the world sometimes do not mind to hold his tongue. In fact, if I keep in constant rigorous supervision on myself, I know that the weakest escape me and I will never take them wherever I want. For this reason it happens that many times I patiently listen to their words unnecessary. And because I am weak, dragged a little in vain talk, I get to speak willingly of what I had begun to listen against desire, and of hanging nicely to lie where I was sorry to fall.
What kind of watch I have, therefore, that instead of sitting on the mountain to work, still lie in the valley of weakness?
But the Creator and Redeemer of mankind has the ability to donate to me unworthy of the nobility of life and efficiency of language, because, for her love, no savings to speak of myself in him.
