MEDITATION ...

from some "Letters and Spiritual Conferences" of St. Vincent de 'Paoli, Priest

(See letters, 2546, etc. Correspondance, Entretiens, Documents, Paris 1922-1925, passim)
Serving Christ in the poor

We must adjust our attitude towards the poor from the outside what appears in them, and even according to their inner qualities. Rather, we must consider in the light of faith.
The Son of God chose to be poor, and be represented by the poor. In his passion had almost the figure of a man, appeared before a friendly crowd, a stone of stumbling block to Jews, yet he qualifies the evangelization of the poor: "He sent me to proclaim good news to the poor" (Lk 4.18).
We enter into those feelings and make what Jesus did: treat the poor, console them, help them, advise.
He himself chose to be born poor, the poor receive in his company, serving the poor, putting yourself in the poor, to say that the good or the evil that we will take it to the poor as done to his divine person. God loves the poor, and, consequently, he loves those who love the poor. In reality, when you love someone very, brings love to his friends and his servants. So we have reason to hope that, for the sake of them, God will love us too.
When we go to visit them, try to understand them to suffer with them, and put us in the inner disposition of the Apostle saying: "I am made all things to all" (1 Cor 9:22). Therefore strive to become sensitive to the suffering and misery of others. We pray to God for this, which give us the spirit of mercy and love, that there fill and preserve him.
service of the poor should be preferred to everything. There must be no delay. If the hour of prayer you have to take a medicine or a relief to the poor, go quietly.
Give God your action, joining the intention of prayer. You need not worry and believe I missed, if you left the service of the poor prayer. It is not leave God, when you leave God for God, that is a work of God to do another. If you leave the prayer to help a poor, know that doing so is to serve God's love is above all the rules, and all must abide by it. It is a great lady, we must do what it commands.
All those who love the poor in life will have no fear of death. We serve the poor, therefore, with renewed love and seek the most abandoned. They are our lords and masters.
