Saint of the Day: SAN LUCA, Evangelista
Antioch - Rome (?) - First Century AD

Luke, evangelist and author of the Acts of the Apostles, is called "the writer of the meekness of Christ." Paul calls him "dear doctor", a companion of his missionary journeys comforter of his imprisonment. His gospel, which highlights the universality of salvation and favor of Christ to the poor, provides evidence as original as the infancy narratives, the parables of mercy and annotations that reflect sensitivity to the sick and suffering. In the book of Acts describes the ideal figure of the Church, faithful to the teaching of the Apostles, in communion of love, the breaking of bread and in prayers. (Aug. Roma)

MEDITATION ...

from the homilies on the Gospels by Saint Gregory the Great, pope

(17.1 Om. -3; PL 76.1139)
The Lord follows his preachers

Our Lord and Savior, dear brothers, warns us now with the word, now with the facts. In fact, his actions are deemed to control, because while quietly does something we do know we have to do. Here he sent out two by two disciples to preach, because there are two precepts of charity: the love of God, that is, and love of neighbor.
The Lord sends the disciples out two by two to preach to tell us that must not tacitly assume the task of those who did not preach the love of others.
then is rightly said that "he sent ahead of him in every town and place he intended to go" (Luke 10:1). The Lord follows his preaching, because preaching comes first, and only then the Lord comes to dwell in our souls, when the preceding words of the announcement, through which the truth is accepted in the mind. This is why Isaiah says to the same preachers: "Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God" (Isaiah 40:3). And the psalmist says to them, "paved the way for those who get the sunset" (Ps 67, 5 Vulgate).. The Lord went "sunset" that was his death.
Indeed the Lord ascended "sunset" since his death, he served as a pedestal to show greater glory through the resurrection. He got "sunset" because they trod on the rising death he had faced.
We therefore paved the way for one who salt "sunset" when we preach to your minds the glory, because, being then himself, to illuminate the presence of his love.
listen to what he says when sending preachers: "The harvest is plentiful but the laborers are few. Pray therefore the Lord of the harvest to send laborers into his harvest "(Mt 9:37-38). For a great harvest but the laborers are few. Of this shortage, we can not speak without deep sadness, because there are people who hear the good word, but there are no preachers. Here, the world is full of priests, and yet is rarely those who work in the Lord's harvest. We have taken the priestly office, but not doing the works that the office entails.
So think carefully, dear brethren, the Lord's words: "Pray to the Lord of the harvest to send laborers into his harvest." Pray for us, because we are able to work for you as is proper, because the language does not remain idle exhortation, and our silence does not condemn, in the righteous judge, we, who have assumed the office of preachers.
